Notes from Monday

Team Captains, Remember...
*All onsite food needs to have a permit from Kelly Olfers at City Hall 997-7521. Kelly is not going to charge anyone for the permit, but you HAVE to have one if you are cooking anything beyond a ‘bake sale.’

*Your campsite is 10X20, and all are facing inward to help promote onsite fundraising. It will also help to have signs to promote your fundraiser

*Bring team signs for your campsite and to carry on the team lap. I would love to have spirit signs to cheer the survivors all the way around the track!!

*No pets…sorry, the schools rule not ours.

*Please bring lighters for your team to use during the Luminaria ceremony.

*If anyone has pictures from last year, especially of closing ceremony, please bring them to me, or email them.

To clarify the rumors....

I got a call today stating team members were not participating in this year's Relay For Life because the American Cancer Society supported Pro-Choice organizations.

My answer....No! The American Cancer Society financially funds
R...research
E...education
A...advocay
S...services
ON to a cure for all types of cancer.

They do not support other organizations at all, unless they are..
R...Researching cures for cancer
E...Educating people about cancer and cancer prevention
A...Advocating about the American Cancer Society and it's cause, or
S...Supporing a Service provided by the American Cancer Society

The official answer from the VP of communications for the American Cancer Society...
The American Cancer Society does not support Pro-Choice organizations. There was an instance, last year where the American Cancer Society funded a grant for Smoking Cessation classes in a clinic. The funds were used to train the teachers and support the Smoking Cesation program. It was later found out that Planned Parenthood classes were also taught within the same clinic. These were completely different programs that just happened to be taught within the same building.

I hope this clears up the issue. If there is anything further, please ask me. I will come talk to your organization or send you to the official people within the American Cancer Society.

PLEASE HELP ME CLEAR THESE ISSUES, spread the word and always ask! Dont just assume the rumors are correct.

Thank you, ARAH

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Each year 130,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

I can fight back against colon cancer....
*I can get tested for colon cancer if I am 50 or older. I have the power to avoid colon cancer by getting tested.
*I can encourage a friend or family member to get tested for colon cancer.
*I can make a personal commitment to decrease my risk. Colon cancer risk factors are age, family history, an drace, but other factors - suck as smoking, obesity, and diet also impact my risk.

Check out the full calendar http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MED/content/MED_1_Cancer_Calendar.asp
Lets incorporate these into our Relay and fundraisers!!

Fundraisers

I would like to throw out a discussion topic on fundraisers. We are well into the time frame where we need to be having our fundraisers.

I have heard a lot of great ideas this year. It is so much easier to get people to give you money for something they need or can use...or a good time.

I was in Creative Awards today, and realized that they can make A LOT of different items!! How about a Koozie with your info and the Relay logo? Water...almost any business could sell bottles of water. This is a great option vs a soda; plus, when you empty your bottle you could leave it on your desk or counter and ask people to drop their dimes in!!! One water bottle holds $100 worth of dimes!!! WOW!

Today I heard a twist on the penny drive idea. If you make the Penny Drive a competition between departments, classes, or offices, the buckets of pennies can grow fast!!! Here is the twist....pennies count, but 'silver money' counts against your total. Therefore the department that is winning would have the other departments putting nickles, dimes and quarters in to try to reverse it. GREAT IDEA!!!

Please comment back and give me some of your fundraising ideas!!! Lets work together to benefit Realy For Life and the American Cancer Society!!!

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

Cancer may have won some battles, but will never win the war,
We cancer fighters will never stop we're reaching for the stars,
Cancer's taken too many lives, but one day soon will be no more,
We'll fight with faith and fight with strength until our spirits soar.

So many battles have been fought, we've worked hard for the cures,
Our thoughts, our hopes, our dreams to win, have kept our motives pure,
Never give up, never surrender, our battle cry proud and strong,
And one day soon we'll see the end, we pray it won't be long.

Til cancer breathes its final breath, down for the count, you'll see,
Never again to hurt and kill, for no more cancer there will be,
But for now, cancer take your stand, soon we'll stop you in your tracks,
Never give up, never surrender, Celebrate, Remember Fight Back!

VOTE, VOTE, VOTE

Tuesday November 6th is Election Day. If you have not already done early voting at the courthouse, GO VOTE on the 6th!!

Remember WE are all advocates, and voting YES to Proposition 15 is a great way to spread our message and FIGHT BACK!!

Relay is like the carpool lane. The only way to get somewhere quickly is to take some people with you.

We are Advocates

Please remember to vote YES to Prop 15, on November 6th. Early voting has already started at the courthouse. You have probably seen or heard Lance Armstrong getting the word out about Prop 15, it is supported by not only the American Cancer Society, but also the Texas Medical Association, Susan G. Komen, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Texas Holds the Cure
Proposition 15 is a state constitutional amendment to establish the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas to:
*Conduct research to prevent and cure cancer.
*Support existing cancer research efforts in Texas.
*Implement the Texas Cancer Plan, a statewide blueprint for cancer prevention and control.

If passed, Proposition 15 will authorize up to $3 billion in state general revenue bonds to fund cancer research, prevention early detection and control programs.

Remember, we are all advocates everyday! On November 6, 2007 we have the opportunity to be even bigger advocates. Please remind everyone you know to VOTE!!

Unite and fight cancer. Vote for Prop 15.

Theme

The theme of Summit was
Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

This is up for discussion (at committee meetings), but I like it. It makes a great answer when we are asked, "What do you do at Relay?" or "Why?"

We Celebrate. the lives of those who have battled cancer.
We Remember. loved ones lost to the disease.
We Fight Back. against a disease that takes too much.

We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperatly want to put and end to the disease. Make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight.

Please comment back, or email relay2007@hotmail.com, so I know you are reading!!

Back from Summit!!

Hello all!! The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life Summit was last weekend, and again the conference was packed with information and helpful resources. The main difference this year was that I went alone. Yep, I had a stranger as a roommate on the 29th floor! I survived amazingly well.

Along with tackling the ballroom with 1300 people each day, I found the support of those 1300 people. We all have a major part of our lives in common, and it took just a few minutes for a click of girls to form. Saturday night was filled with girl fun and confidence building. Getting out of Fredericksburg and meeting people was GREAT! I went out on a limb and did things WAY out of my normal little life and grew because of it.

just notes...

I am still putting together the 2007 scrapbook. Any pictures you have would be greatly appreciated, ESPECIALLY if you have any pictures of the closing ceremony.

If you have any Ink Jet cartridges, please save them for our Relay! Yesterday I received a check from the recycle place!! That is so exciting!

I am still looking to fill several committee positions. If you are interested in helping, please call me 512/644-5307, or reply to this email. If you are receiving this email…then I have a position in mind for you! We can meet for lunch or after work.
